METAMORPHOSIS by Olga Volodina

“Metamorphosis” is a multidisciplinary art project that includes photo exhibition, dance/theater performance and site specific light installation.

Сoncept: This photo series use symbolism to represent: fragile human consciousness influenced by mass media, hypocrisy of the modern society and an average human, who is forced by the system to spend a precious lifetime either on basic survival needs or excessive consumption.

Black and white colours are used to emphasize the edge between good and evil, that humanity is balancing on. Bodies in bandages symbolize sick mankind, weakened by prejudices and fears and vulnerable to manipulations. Information is one of the most dangerous weapons now. Like a cosmetic surgeon can change physical appearence of a person, those who control mass media can change the perception of how reality appears to us and create the illussion of freedom and choice.

Artist’s bio: Olga Volodina is a Russian-born photo artist currently residing in Bangkok. Back in the day she started her professional career as a fashion art photographer in Moscow. Olga is the author of several social and art photo projects. Her works were featured on TV, in print media and exhibited in art galleries. She continues to work on her projects in Thailand. Her works are always very personal and sincere they intend to evoke an emotional connection in the viewer. She sees photography as an exploration of how the camera translates her feelings, thoughts and attitudes. A human is always a main source of inspiration for Olga. Her controversial inner world catalyzes the conveying a message within a single frame, leading to strong compositions and thoughtful lighting decisions.

Gallery VER is pleased to announce the opening of our new gallery spaces, with the opening of MIT JAI INN ‘WETT’ at Gallery VER, Soi Narathiwat 22(Sathu Pradit 15) Narathiwat Rd.

Opening reception: 10 March 2016 from 6.30 pm onwards

For the inaugural opening of Gallery VER, this marking an important transition within the Contemporary Art landscape in Thailand. Gallery VER will open and built premises in the new gallery and studio precinct on Soi Narathiwat 22, Narathiwat Rd., This arts precinct displays a unique vision of shared and communal driven spaces in order to push forward more experimental and conceptual projects in Thailand. Gallery VER is pleased to present its debut exhibition, ‘Wett’ by the pioneering Chiang Mai based artist, Mit Jai Inn. This new contemporary art space is an addition to the cultural map of Bangkok, with the official unveiling of the new VER Gallery spaces.

Further expands upon his art practice though WALL WORKS new bodies of works featuring large maximal field paintings from the ceiling to the floor are half way between being ironic and maximizing every available surface within the gallery space/s pushing to question the other side of contemporary art in favouring of gigantisms and all the tropes of postmodernism – of large scaled installation and video projections. Here we see Mit pushing the physical act of abstract painting into dense and overloaded canvases that feel as there is no true beginning or end in the process of the act – thus dwarfing some of the masters of colour field painting.

For this project Mit Jai Inn has produced works specifically for the architecture in the gallery. Using in part the site to directly paint these wall to ceiling ‘carpets’ of layered and textured canvases of glowing multi-coloured impasto canvases. Here we see a trick bring displayed before our eyes as Mit Jai Inn tricks us into – sensing a faux impressionism, but never quite giving fully to the viewer, that state of a ‘landscape’ as a ‘classical beauty’. Within these canvases there are multiple paintings pushed together into one final work. Going through a variety of styles, actions and mark making, processes and ultimately an historical erasure and self-censorship applied to the picture plane -creating a layering of meaning and a disruption thus to deny a cohesive vocal / visual statement – much as the current status Thailand (and historically) for Mit Jai Inn perhaps this is a way of applying culturally as a way of ‘getting by’.

For decades, Mit Jai Inn has been working on many levels within a focused and specific area concentrating on the physical act of painting, he sees within the specifics of the ‘problem of painting’ as a fuel to push further and further into this perceived narrow field – to produce multiple / manifolded results in his own idiosyncratic vision that is constantly being rearranged and reinterpreted. Mit usually leaves his work to be open-ended and encourages the viewer to percept, read, interpret and enjoy the work as a social action.

Mit is constantly expanding and reinterpreting his own art practice. Within this exhibition, again he presents new possibilities in viewing his work, via his site specific installation of overloaded materially and physically via the maximal display within the new galleries architecture as a focal point of overwhelming the viewer with his plastering of the walls with canvases. Mit Jai Inn seeks new possibilities and emancipates himself from art historical one-sidedness, by blurring the categorization of art terms, while still actively being primarily a painter.

Contour อ้างอิงถึงเส้นสมมติสามมิติในแผนที่เพื่อสร้างแบบจำลองและทำความเข้าใจสภาพภูมิศาสตร์

Contour Drawing ในทางศิลปะ คือเทคนิคการวาดเส้นอย่างรวดเร็ว เพื่อทำความเข้าใจ ขนาด มิติ รูปร่าง รูปทรงภายนอก ของสิ่งต่างๆ

สำหรับนิทรรศการศิลปะ Contour ในครั้งนี้ คือการแสดงผลงานจิตรกรรมและภาพถ่ายร่วมสมัย โดยศิลปินไทยสองคนที่เข้าร่วมโครงการศิลปินในพำนักที่เมืองริคุเซนทะคะตะ ประเทศญี่ปุ่น ด้วยการสนับสนุนโดยเจแปนฟาวน์เดชั่น กรุงเทพฯ

อังกฤษ อัจฉริยโสภณ ทำงานร่วมกับชุมชนชาวเมืองริคุเซนทะคะตะ ในโครงการ 1000 Rainbows ซึ่งมีเนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับความหวัง แต่เมื่อกลับมาที่เมืองไทยในยุคสมัยที่ “สี” ถูกใช้เป็นสัญลักษณ์ของกลุ่มอุดมการณ์ทางการเมือง เขาได้สร้างสรรค์จิตรกรรมนามธรรมที่ได้รับแรงบันดาลใจมากจากผลงาน White on White ของศิลปินชาวรัสเซีย Kazimir Malevich และผลงานจิตรกรรมชุด Spectrum V ของศิลปินชาวอเมริกัน Ellsworth Kelly เพื่อบันทึกเหตุการณ์และเป็นประจักษ์พยานต่อความเปลี่ยนแปลงในยุคที่สังคมไทยกำลังเผชิญหน้ากับการเปลี่ยนผ่านครั้งสำคัญ

ธวัชชัย พัฒนาภรณ์ เดินทางไปที่เมืองริคุเซนทะคะตะครั้งแรกในปี พ.ศ.2554 หลังเกิดเหตุการณ์สึนามิไม่นาน โดยได้บันทึกสภาพความเสียหายครั้งใหญ่ที่เกิดขึ้นไว้จำนวนหนึ่ง ในปี พ.ศ.2557 และ 2558 ศิลปินได้เดินทางกลับไปอีกครั้งในช่วงที่เมืองใหม่กำลังสร้างขึ้น ธรรมชาติ ป่าไม้ และภูเขาบริเวณใกล้เคียง กลายมาเป็นฐานดินของเมืองแห่งอนาคตที่คาดเดาได้ยาก เหมือนคนแปลกหน้าที่ต้องทำความรู้จักกันใหม่ แม้สำหรับชาวเมืองที่เคยคุ้น – การมีส่วนร่วมในความเปลี่ยนแปลงทั้งในอดีตและปัจจุบัน เป็นแรงบันดาลใจในการถ่ายทอดผลงานภาพถ่ายแบบร่วมสมัย โดยทดลองสร้างกายภาพของภาพถ่ายแต่ละใบขึ้นมาใหม่ ให้เสมือนภาพจดจำของศิลปิน และความทรงจำของชาวเมือง

‘Traveling with the minimum to discover the most’-

‘The past 19 years I have lived and worked in many countries. Working as a photographer for news agencies covering conflicts and creating long term documentaries on social issues. Now, I have decided to continue seeing the world, in a literal sense. I’ve decided to load a Royal Enfield with the minimum necessary things with the idea of going around the world. The possibility of stopping or continuing, guided by my curiosity, without time tables or timelines the journey is the objective, more than any destination it gives me time to comprehend what I observe.’ (Walter Astrada).

This special event will consist of a showcase of photographs taken along the way by Argentinian freelance photographer Walter Astrada and a casual intro talk about The Journey where he will share anecdotes and experiences as he goes along with his Royal Enfield.

Last Dinosaurs is an Australian indie rock and from Brisbane, Queensland, consisting of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, Sean Casky, lead guitarist, Lachlan Caskey, bass guitarist, Michael Slone, and drummer, Dan Koyama. The band’s debut EP Back from the Dead in 2010 and subsequent debut studio album In a Million Years in 2012 received critical praise by Australian media critics. They released their latest album, Wellness, last August and are super excited to be coming back to Bangkok.

Those who were at HYH Mini Festival back in 2013 know just how fun their live show is. Don’t miss the chance to see them live again!

Next, meet Panama Music!

We’re sure you must have heard their song “Always”. Fronted by Perth-born songwriter and classically-trained pianist, Jarrah McCleary, Panama’s sophomore EP leads with the anthemic title track ‘Always’, recorded in San Francisco with and produced by Eric Broucek (!!!, Classixx, Holy Ghost!, Hercules & Love Affair).

Title track and EP opener “Always” has been generating some serious radio play and it’s not hard to see why; the superbly crafted indie pop number invokes waves of summer nostalgia. This ‘summery feel’ has always been central to Panama’s sound, (look at 2012 tune “Magic” for example) so it’s fitting that the opening track is the one most similar to the sound Panama is recognised for.
