On December 2009, SOAD support the Designer talk event “Design Circus” organized by Norman Teh in Bangkok. After the event, Kentaro Hiroki (SOAD), Joseph Foo (3 nity) and Chung Wei Fung (Daesin Art Academy of Art) had conversation and sharing the though of South East Asia.

Firstly, as Design and Art educator, we have a questioning of communication among neighbor countries (SE) under the internationalization of Art and Design Education. We raised a simple question “Do we know our Neighbor?”

The main obstacle is, there is no cultural exchange program are established in particular South East Asia in Art and Design. Therefore, in fact that most of the schools in SEA is looking to the west rather than their own neighbor.

On May 2010, Joseph and Kentaro bring up this issue to Nur Hidayah Bte Abu Bakar, who is the Design Communication program leader at Lasalle College of Art. Recently she promoted as Dean of Faculty (http://www.lasalle.edu.sg/About-Us/Our-Academics/Faculty-Member.aspx/Nur-Hidayah-Bte-Abu-Bakar)

On October 2010, Instructor from SOAD, Lassalle College of Art and Dasein Art Academy gathering together and discuss and sharing thought to create the “Neighbor program” as our first meetin with guest designer and educator from Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore

The result of discussion, the objectives of the program are
–       network to encourage closer relationship
–       platform to share among one another
–       hub for design and art education
–       “research as practice” project on South East Asia’s visual culture

The program had first show at Dasein Academy of Art, title of the Exhibition is “Same, same but different” 2010. The experience of setting up of the show was a remarkable experience to all student and teacher to exchange the different perspectives in Art and Design Education among SEA. Therefore, it is realization of how student quickly build up closer friendship and work closely each other is remarkable.

Neighbor project called “We eat what we eat” with new friend from Indonesia. (Binus University) at Singapore in 2011 hosted by Lassalle College of Art has been kicked start. During the workshop, student from each countries separate the group into 4 and each group has student from each countries, in which has more colorful experience among Neighbors.

Now they are working through internet/ facebook/skype etc. to discuss their group work) The work are not toward the outcome base, it is more focus on experiential approach in Visual communication field and bring the outcomes to show at TCDC.
