Tribute to MAMAFAKA

“The result of preparation and hard work will one day bring you success, as long as you  keep on working”; a quote that belonged to “MAMAFAKA” the moniker in the art industry of “Tum – Pharuephon Mukdasanit”, a prominent street artist who created the character “MR. HELLYEAH!” that can be seen all over Bangkok. It sounded like a simple statement that everyone could understand, but it came out from the mouth of a man who was truly passionate and hard working with his art, which he had done so all his life.

“Tum MAMAFAKA” graduated from the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts at Rangsit University. After he graduated, he immediately started his career as a graphic designer at Ogilvy & Matter, one of the top advertising agencies in the creative industry and Creative Juice Bangkok. He had won numerous advertising awards that guaranteed his exceptional skills from B.A.D Awards, Adsman, to Adsfest. Around the year 2002-2004, he decided to gather his graphic designer friends to start a design collective called b.o.r.e.d (Band of Radical Experiment Design) in order to become a full-time freelancer. Not long after that, b.o.r.e.d soon became a well-known group of designers that everyone was well acquaint of, with many projects such as illustration, motion graphics, animation, and experimental film that became popular and attracted many interests from the people within the design industry. They were perhaps the most popular designers in the country at the time who changed the meaning of illustrators and graphic designers in Thailand.

After b.o.r.e.d had achieved widespread success and popularity, each of the members had separated into different paths of their careers. By 2011, Tum started to work as a full-time freelancer under his own name. Other than being an illustrator and graphic designer, he also had great interest in street art. At that time, street art was only a small movement in Thailand. As an artist, he went by his moniker as “MAMAFAKA”. Soon after, he started a group called “FOR”, a group consisting of many prominent Thai street artists who each had their own significant work that Bangkokians are familiar with. As one of the talented graphic designers, Tum had quietly developed his skills in just a few years, until he became “MAMAFAKA”, one of the leading street artists in  Thailand, who later created his signature character called “MR. HELLYEAH!”, a mustachioed, black hairy monster with only one big round eye, and because of MR. HELLYEAH! that could be seen on many walls around Bangkok, people started to remember the name “MAMAFAKA”. The arrival of “MAMAFAKA” had started a kind of a new movement for Thailand’s street art industry. Before, this type of art was deemed by some people as trashy, full of useless spray paints on walls that no one cared and support. However, everything had changed…his artwork had completely changed many Thais’ perspective on street art ever since.

After MAMAFAKA and the MR. HELLYEAH! character had achieved widespread success and critical acclaim, Tum had been commissioned to collaborate with numerous brands such as Vespa x MAMAFAKA, Converse x MAMAFAKA limited edition, Adidas, Vans, Incase, and many others. Furthermore, he even had his solo exhibition showcasing his artwork as MAMAFAKA at Mellow Restaurant & Bar in Thonglor, making him to become the most sought-after artist. Everywhere you look, you would see his work being used in art exhibitions, press conference parties, new fashion collections, and many other social events. Thus, 2012-2013 was his golden year, and everyone in the Thai creative industry all accepted that MAMAFAKA had reached the highest point that none of the street artists before him could achieve. As well as in other artists’ perspective, MAMAFAKA was the only one who could achieve great success both in the art and commercial industry, which was definitely hard to find. MAMAFAKA’s image became an important inspiration to the younger generation of illustrators, graphic designers, and even street artists. “MAMAFAKA” became the idol in achieving and pushing oneself in getting his dream and success for teenagers that was accessible and not too out of reach.

“MAMAFAKA” or “Tum – Pharuephon Mukdasanit” passed away on September 9, 2013  at the age of 34 from a drowning accident in Phuket. While his name was shining high and bright as if it would never fall, this is considered to be the most heartbreaking news no one could ever imagined it would happen. MAMAFAKA’s death became an important phenomenon in Thailand’s street art and art industry. The trend of using the hashtag #prayformamafaka in the social media was massive, as tons of people prayed for him while he was still unconscious. Even famous artists in the art, creative, and fashion industry left their messages on Facebook, hoping for Tum to wake up and be back to normal again. Although, in the end, Tum had finished his last breath and would never wake up, people would still leave flowers in front of his house as a memorial to their favorite artist. From everything that has happened, it proved that “MAMAFAKA” has become a legend, and even though he had left this world, his legacy including MR. HELLYEAH! will always remain in many people’s hearts. We are proud to say that, “we once lived in the same era as this magnificent artist, an era where Thailand is growing in the arts, an era where we had the legendary artist, MAMAFAKA.” We would like to thank you for every work and everything you had left behind. R.I.P MAMAFAKA.

“The result of preparation and hard work will one day bring you success, as long as you  keep on working”
