Patuek dooddot interview (5)

DOODDOT Interview with “Pa Tuek” [English translation]

Patuek dooddot interview (4)

Patuek dooddot interview (3)

Patuek dooddot interview (6)

Who is Pa Tuek? (The word “Pa” in Thai is equivalent to “Papa” in English, which Thai people use to call an elderly man with respect) “Pa Tuek is a stylish man with bushy beard, who often goes to many social events”. This is probably what most people know about Pa Tuek. But we truly believe that there are still a majority of people out there who also want to know who this “Pa Tuek” really is. Who is he? What does he do for a living? What is his outlook that made him has so much coolness and swag? Apart from being one of the most important Thai “style icon” at the age of 60, does he have any other sides that we still don’t know about? Today we are here with him now. Meet “Phoosik Pattanapragan”, or as everyone knows him by, “Pa Tuek”.

So who is Pa Tuek?

Many people asked me that. Sometimes youngsters would say that I’m the owner of Siam Center (laugh). At the end of the day, Pa Tuek is Pa Tuek. I’m just a 60 year old man. People who know me well will understand that I have been through a lot of things in my life. I have always been active and…I like fashion. Fashion has always run through my family, from my father’s father (grandfather), and also my father’s brother (uncle). Every member of the family has always loved to dress up. It’s in our DNA I guess.

What do you do for a living?

Right now I’m retired. All my life I have worked a lot, but mostly I was into business. Right now I have my own tour company and Swallow’s nest in the South. When I was young I imported cars from England, and I also used to trade antiques when I was in France. I am finished with that job. There is a lot of fuss with selling antiques because different countries have their own laws and what not, plus I had to go across many countries. I almost got sent to jail by many countries (laugh). I guess I was quite mischievous.

How did you become interested in fashion?

I love to watch movies and I started watching movies since I was a kid. Even though I would get punished by my father afterwards, I still liked to sneak to the movie theaters. Mostly I would watch Hollywood films. I’m from the South and at that time I lived in Hat Yai. People there enjoyed watching movies. I read a lot of books and magazines, especially fashion magazines. I had a dream when I was a kid that I wanted to travel abroad from the influence of watching films. Watching films is something that every teenagers should not forget about. Think about it, each movies that are made have been invested for billions and billions, but they let us pay just a few hundred, two hundred Baht to watch. Movies are a type of media that allows us to constantly develop as a person. Even though I am now 60, I often still go watch movies in theaters. I still get the excitement whenever I’m in the queue waiting in line with my movie ticket in hand. I think it is the movies that truly made me become interested in fashion, ever since that Hollywood star “Steve McQueen”. I was born in 1953, therefore I was also in the hippie era. Since I was into the Western culture and the fashion, it made me want to travel and stay abroad.

What did you think you would be doing when you first started to want to live abroad?

I planned to work there. Actually I planned to work and also study. I met my wife when I was in the UK as well and we’ve been through a lot in life together. I have tons of stories to tell before I have become who I am now today, you won’t believe how many times I had to wash dishes back then.

This means that you were also absorbed by fashion from abroad?

Yes… When I was in England, every weekend I would always walk around Sloane Square because there was no Brick Lane at the time. Like today, Sloane Square was considered to be the High Street of that time. I think fashion is an entertainment for your life, just as eating is part of life’s happiness. I know we may not all have the same interests, but for me, fashion is my happiness, it is the air that I breathe. I think there is one thing you can observe, I’ve been to a lot of places. No matter what country that is, a country can be further developed as long as its people are cool from the inside. Even if the country is developed, but if its people are not cool, I can guarantee that that country is still not complete. Am I correct? If you are rich and have all the money, so what? I just don’t think that’s good enough. No matter what country that is, if its people still don’t have substance, even how much developed that country look, it’s still not okay. Why? Because “fashion” reflects the person’s perspective, it shows the vision of the people in that country. It also reflects the economy of that certain country as well. Don’t ever think that fashion is all mumbo-jumbo stuff. I like to see people being into fashion. Fashion in this sense doesn’t have to be like “Pa Tuek”. We all have different tastes. It’s like that saying, “everything can be taught, but fashion has to be thoroughly studied”. For example, a few days ago I had a reunion with my old friends from school. All of them are smart guys; 12 of them are now doctors. I told my friends that I’m not as smart as you guys are, but they said to me, “it’s true that 12 of us turned out to be doctors, but you are one of a kind” (laugh). What they said was pretty spot on. There are 12 doctors and 40 who turned out to be engineers. But yeah, I’m the only person who turned out like this. I guess I’m a little proud of it (laugh).

DOODDOT Interview with “Pa Tuek” [English translation]

What was your life like when you were in England?

I have seen a lot of things from there. To be honest, I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth. Therefore, being able to go live in England is considered to be the time where I built myself up. I’m not the kind of person who only likes fashion and doesn’t do good in life. I like to say to the kids that first they have to know how to “earn money”, especially living in this country, where you need to spend money. There was one time when my mother had a little injury, and we had to pay around 70,000-80,000 Baht for the private hospital. That’s why I like to say to kids these days that “no matter how cool or artsy you are, you still have to save up”.

Not all of us were born with a silver spoon in our mouth. We all have to take care of our mother and father, our siblings, and love ones. We all have things that we need to buy. “Being in this country, you need to have some money”.

This means that good fashion comes with good economy?

Part of it. In order for you to reach nirvana, you need to have good economy, even if you’re a monk. I mean, you have to have your residence and money ready. If you don’t have these things then you can’t do it. You’re meditating and your children come up to you asking for 100 Baht, or your children ask you for their school fees. How will you ever attain peace? No way! It’s the same for fashion and tastes. These things can happen once you are ready, am I right? Believe me, “You can’t fulfill yourself with only your good tastes, but you also need to eat in order to survive”

When you were young up until now, how do you see the development of fashion in Thailand?

Thailand is still an undeveloped country. I’m serious. There are still a small amount of people who are really into fashion, and this group of people are all clustered in Siam Square. If you start to drive a bit out of the city, you won’t see any fashionable people anymore. I admit that our country is still developing, and that our fashion industry is still not widely spread out compared to the development of the country. You can see by turning on the television and watch the people in the congress. I mean, just look at them (laugh). I sit there watching the TV from my fashion perspective. What the hell are you guys talking about? What can you guys even talk about when all of you have such bad taste? And how the hell are you going to make this country a better place? All the things that come out of their mouths…I watch from every side. The thing is, they need to go back and take a look at themselves first, because good taste come from inside. It shows all your perspective and vision, am I right?

This means that the development within our people is still very little?

Yes… Like I said, if your economy is not ready, and you wake up one day feeling ill, then that means you need to have money to go to the doctor. Then where will you find the time to think about these sort of things? And I’m not just talking about fashion, but I’m also talking about people’s mentality.  Therefore, “you need to be able to survive first”. Once you can live sufficiently, then the government must come and help with the healthcare. One of my foreigner friends used to stay with me here, and he got ill. He had to pay 150,000 Baht per night at a private hospital, and his insurance company flew all the way here to tell him that he can’t die here, he can’t die in Thailand. Turns out he stayed at the hospital for about a month with the cost up to around 5 million Baht. Even the doctor said, “their people see themselves as saints, if he was a Thai person, he would have died a long time ago, no one would take care of him”. I’m serious. I also want to know that what would Thai people do? That’s why I always say to kids all the time that no matter what you do, whether you’re into dressing up and fashion, you must also think about your economy.

What kind of person do you think is “cool”?

This subject actually needs a lot of explanation. I think it’s the person’s “mentality” that will first shine through. You will know when you see one. At least this person must have something that he or she is truly passionate about. For example, you will sense what kind of person likes music, because fashion doesn’t have to be all the same am I right? A person who loves music doesn’t have to be a fashionista. His or her deep passion for music is what makes the person cool in  their own way. I think other ordinary people should also have their certain interests, not just always go with the trends.

And what if one of these ordinary people is starting to have his certain interests and want to shine out, what advice would you give to this person?

Firstly, the easiest way is for him to have an idol. For example if you like Einstein (laugh), then you have to know how he was, his ideas, etc. Frankly speaking, you have to know yourself first what you really like, what are you passionate about. The word “passionate” is very important. No matter what you like, you have to study about it. The same goes to people who like to collect amulets or antiques, like myself. There’s a difference between a person who studied about antiques and the person who just likes antiques. When they see antique stuff, these people would automatically think that they are all so beautiful. But if you’ve seen a lot of antiques and studied about it before, you will start to understand that maybe this antique is not that pretty, that you’ve seen ones that are prettier, something like that. I think with this subject, you need time. Just learn how to slowly absorb it, and you will eventually develop your own tastes and interests.

So do you have any techniques in choosing items to mix and match, whether it’s clothes or other items that you wear?

I have gone through some of my dark ages before (laugh). I don’t think it’s something that can be a fixed equation, but it’s up to your life experiences, since fashion is always evolving and changing, it is not infinite. However, there will always be a lead. The same goes with cars. If this year the Mercedes Benz’s head lights are round, then Toyota’s head lights will also be round. But in the end, fashion is a way to “express” yourself, it comes from within, and I know one when I see one. I don’t think there’s a direct way to learn it. It depends on each person’s preferences, and it’s whether your preferences and tastes will make an impact to other people or not. Actually, it’s like art. If you’re going to sit alone, looking at an artwork and say it’s beautiful, then it’s up to you, because if you like it, it’s your business (laugh).

Patuek dooddot interview (2)

What items do you like to buy the most?

I buy everything, I like to shop. I have hundreds of hats and shoes. Like I said, it’s about being entertained. I have a friend of mine who is quite a wealthy man. He used to go out at night with women for 30,000-40,000 Baht everyday, can you believe it? Is it superfluous? Well, it is his preference. But if you ask me, even I’d say it’s not really a good habit, but again, what can you do, he likes it! I have a friend who loves to drink all night, and he would spend 300,000-400,000 Baht on wine. I consider myself not a superfluous person in this way. I only come into the fashion path, if I have to go to other paths I don’t think my taste is good enough. Like drinking for instance, I can say that I don’t have a specialty for it.

Where do you choose to shop?

I have this problem since I was a kid because I am big built. I can’t really find the clothes my size here. Back in the day I would wait for the G.I. to come and then go buy the clothes or shoes from their camp, which still affects how I choose my items today. But actually I like the work done by Thai designers, sometimes it looks really good. It’s not that I hate it, I really do like it, but I can’t find the right size for me. I think right now Thai designers have improved a lot, because we have more outlook, and the styles are more rich. I really do like clothes, and I never judge people on what they wear. It’s not like you only have to wear brand names. But in the end, it always comes down to our tastes. Some things might look good when we wear it, when in reality it doesn’t look that great.

And what about your hobbies? Do you have any collectibles?

I have tons, I collect everything. Right now I’m really into taxidermy. I’ve liked it for a really long time now because I like to collect weird things. As for my hobby, right now I’m studying about religion, but I also haven’t abandoned fashion. Nowadays when I turn on the television I like to watch only two things, fashion and religion. I like to study about every religion.

Today, most people would see you as a “style icon”. Is there anything else that you think people still don’t know about you?

I guess it’s the side where I’m very into religion, especially at this age I like to ask myself all the time, “why were we born?” “where do we go after we die?”, these sort of philosophical questions. Personally, I think there is only one God in this world. I don’t think there’s a divide between Thai hell or any hell…right now I’m looking for which hell I should go to (laugh). If you compare me to other men my age, it’s true that I may seem like a fashionable guy who likes to go out all the time. But whenever I’m free I like to visit temples every evening, to pray. Since I used to stay at temples, that’s why my house is like this. Besides, I don’t like things to be tidy. I like my house to be messy, and don’t even think about tidying it up, because I’ll be very angry. I’m serious, otherwise I can’t live like that, I probably can’t find my belongings. But what’s important is don’t underestimate life. Life is not just about being cool and stylish…real life is much more complicated than that. There are a lot of things to think about.

About fashion and religion?

This subject is also up to your taste. Religion is also considered to be a taste. Sometimes when I talk to kids about it, they still don’t get it, but I was into religion since I was a kid. I believe in things that other people don’t believe. For example, I believe in your life’s destination. I believe that heaven really does exist. Nowadays when kids talk about religion, they always like to base it on scientific theories, but religion is more powerful than science. Everyday I would pray before I leave the house, because personally I like the language that is used for praying. It sounds like such a sacred language. I think to myself all the time, that if I die tomorrow, what would I be thinking?

This means that being superfluous, doing business, or even being fashionable, these things can all go together with religion?

Yes! And that’s what you can call being “cool”. These things must be able to go well together. An easy example is, some people they don’t drink alcohol, and we should not judge these people’s opinions. Some people drink just to show off, just to act drunk. That’s not cool. When you drink, you get drunk, you underestimate things, you get dizzy and confused. Also for someone who is building themselves up by doing business, Buddhism can help you. You have to think that you will succeed in this life, because you don’t even know if you’ll be born a human in the next life (laugh).

What are the places you often go to in Bangkok?

I like to go to malls. I like to go to Siam Paragon, Central World, or sometimes to temples like Wat Suthat Thep Wararam, and also Yaowarat (Bangkok’s China Town). I like things that are quite old. I like to go look at vintage stuff at Chatuchak Market and Klongthom. I have to say that our country is very lucky that we’re right next to Cambodia. Because of the Rongkluea Market, we are able to sell tons of vintage stuff. Nowhere else in the world are like us! Am I right? Plus, it’s so cheap! Thai youngsters are very lucky. If you’re really into vintage stuff, you can’t find it in London or New York because they’re very expensive. Our country has lots of goods. If I don’t travel to anywhere else, then every weekend I’ll always go to Chatuchak Market.

Seems like you have traveled a lot, and that you have lived your life. What cities do you like most personally?

My most favorite is probably London. Sometimes I like London even more than Thailand, because there are so many inspirations there. England is like what Roundfinger (a famous Thai writer) once said, “the food for the body is expensive, but the food for the heart is cheap”. It’s very true. Even if the food there cost around 400-500 Baht per dish, but the food for the mind is cheap, especially if you like art. From the billboards, to coffee bags, to pub musicians. I still get goosebumps just by talking about it. New York is my second favorite, and Paris the third (laugh), because they’re all developed countries. I like New York because there are a lot of museums. But for me, London is the best, because of the diversities there. I like things that are diverse. Other people may not like it, but I do. There are Chinese and Indians everywhere in England, but how come the people there can live productively? I lived in England since I was 24 until I had two daughters. Even if this country is not my mother country, but it’s the country that had provided me. I have money to spend because of England. I’m not that skillful of a man, I’m always so talkative. Someone used to say to me why he wanted me to help him with his business. He said, because I can just talk about anything. The thing is, in any business, they need someone who can talk smoothly like water, in order to connect and build everything up. Hey! I guess I’m quite useful (laugh).

So traveling is important?

I think for kids who have their dreams, they must travel abroad. I myself was a kid from the countryside. For countryside kids to compete with Bangkok kids is impossible, and for Bangkok kids to compete with kids who has studied or travel abroad is also impossible. They might not be more talented, but they certainly have more advantages because they’ve seen more things. The same goes to the story of studying about antiques that I told you before. If you see something that you have never seen before and you said, “this is beautiful”, then that’s not right! It’s not right because you’ve never seen a lot of those things before. When you see the Niagara Falls, you’ll immediately think that it’s the biggest waterfall or whatever, but if you see Victoria Falls in Kenya, it’s much much bigger, making Niagara Falls look really ordinary.

I think it is important for kids to travel abroad, but what I’m saying is “if” they have the chance. When I was a kid, I was just an ordinary countryside boy. When my grandfather went to work, he would bring me to stay at the temple. I had to struggle until I got to study vocational education. It’s true that I was poor, but I had big dreams. My life assets were low, so I had to know my own standing compared to other people who have many days ahead of them to try and do things in life. But I’m not saying that I have given up. It just means that I had to fight for things more than other people. I think I have done and been through everything…some people told me to write a book about my life experiences. I do want to write, but on my book cover it’ll say, “this book is not for talented people to read”, because I understand that things in life are so vast. I understand people who didn’t pass their entrance exams or people who have no special gift or skills. Life isn’t just about that. There are other sides to life.

There’s no fixed equation?

Sometimes when I read the newspaper, I think for the person who committed crimes, it is true that what they did was wrong. But part of it is because of the law? It’s because the world has human rights. Like the people who use drugs, they get punished by the law, but in the end, it’s their bodies, isn’t it? We have to first separate the law from morality, because they are two different things. I watched this one documentary when I was in America that talked about a cocaine dealer. It followed his life, his home, and you can see that his mother is paralyzed, his child is handicapped, and in America they use the jury system right? In the end, the court finalized that “he is not guilty”. See? In the end, he got released. There’s a fine line between morality and the law. Sometimes the law is there to help the majority of people to be able to stay together as a whole.

The same goes to our country with the cases of illegally ripping DVDs. I understand the copyrights and everything, but our country is a poor country. Let me ask you this, have you ever copied a Windows application? Do you have that much money to buy the legit ones? I want to know, with some Hollywood movies, how many poor people can actually buy the legit ones? I’m being very honest here. Therefore, what’s right and wrong is sometimes hard to say. Before I can get to where I am today, I have been through a lot, and I’ve seen a lot. I’ve done everything in my life. A monk used to say to me, “you’re standing at the edge of hell”, but I’m not in hell yet (laugh).

How do you handle all the problems in life?

I have a lot of patience. I may seem like an easy-going, funny man, but when I try to do something, I really try hard. I used to get stuck in Africa. I went to do a business at the time, and my money ran out. I had to think of every possible way to survive…I was stuck at a bus terminal, and this black guy came up to me and dumped me at a hotel, telling me to stay in the room, and he will get me the money. I still remember back to that day that I couldn’t possibly do anything. I couldn’t understand the language, and no matter how much I wanted to come home, I just couldn’t, because I would get screwed by my investor. Most of the money that he invested was already gone, besides I was the only one who worked for the job. So all I could do was wait. Us human beings have to have tolerance and patience, this is very important. Have “patience”, and your time will come, believe me on this. My time eventually came, but I had to wait for months, finally I got to come home.

It’s up to the way you think about things. When I felt like I was about to die, I then started to have faith in religion. I believed that the next life really exists, because you don’t believe in karma at all, then it means that you can do anything you want. You can even kill your own parents, because there’s no sin, no karma. Nowadays, I often talk to the Lord Buddha, to please send good people into my life, don’t send me bad people who will make me do bad things. I know that my heart isn’t that bad. My wife knows me well, she’ll always say, “Even if Tuek is a little bonkers, but he has a good heart”.

What is your life like at the age of 60?

I think that my life has already achieved its success. I’m not a celebrity, I don’t have any special gift or talent, but where ever I go, people would recognize me. I go to England and other countries, people would ask for picture. It’s my little happiness that isn’t big or anything, because it’s not like I’m a Hollywood star (laugh). But up until now, I have already lived enough. It’s not like I want to be famous in the future, it’s not like that. I’m okay now at this point. I’m old now, and I’m more at peace. I think after this I’ll be with the Lord Buddha.

Do you have any dreams that you still haven’t achieved at this point in life?

I don’t think I have any. Like everything I have told you, for a countryside boy to get to where I am today, I am already fulfilled. I get to travel all around the world, I get to work in many fields, and I’ve seen a lot in life. I am able to sleep at peace now. Even if tomorrow I don’t wake up, it’s okay. It’s like, “I can live, but I’m also ready to die”. Look at Sayun Sunya (a popular Thai country singer), for example. I really like him that he wouldn’t take chemotherapy. In my eyes, he’s very cool. How many people in this world would want to die? Even if you live for one year or five years more, you’ll be in the same period anyway.

But maybe I have said too much, because in the end I guess I’m also afraid to die. You have to be conscious. I tell myself all the time that, “we are here in this world just temporarily”. The same goes to you kids. If you have something you want to do, or if you have any dreams, then you must try hard. You must achieve it, and do the best you can.

At that moment, we have come to a conclusion that some things in this world are not meant to be studied through books or any other methods, as some things are up to life experiences. We may never know how much this man has gone through in life. He is not just a party animal or a fashionista, but what is even more important than his image is his mentality that shines through. We dare say that this man is truly “cool”. “Pa Tuek” Phoosik Pattanapragan, a man who’s seasoned character all Thais should not overlooked.
